1) Set the Scene
Help your project look its best and show it off in a natural setting. You'll draw the judges attention and they'll be able to see how perfect the project fits into real life.
Here are a few staging ideas you're welcome to steal:
Did you make a pillow or blanket? Try setting them on a couch or a neatly made bed.
Did you make a seasonal project? Hang holiday decorations to create a festive space.
Did you make a table setting? Set a table with your best dinnerware and food.
Did you make clothing? Enlist the help of friends and family to model.
2) Keep It Simple
It can be tempting to overdo it on the staging, but it's important to remember that you want the focus to be on your embroidery.
Don't add TOO many props or you'll end up taking attention any from what matters most: Your Project!
3) Check Your Light
Good lighting can make all the difference when it comes to photographing your project. Even the best and brightest designs can be dulled by bad lighting.
Try these tricks to get the best shot possible:
Daylight tends to look best. Try to take your photos during the day with the blinds open.
Test the flash. Try taking photos with and without the flash to see what looks best.
Watch out for shadows! Don't let anything block your light and cast shadows on your project.
4) Give Yourself Options
Once you've set the scene and your lighting is picture perfect, take all the photos you can. You can submit more than one for the contest so they won't go to waste.
Try to take a variety of photos:
Take close-ups of the embroidery. It'll show off your stellar craftsmanship.
Take wider shots. Make sure we can see the whole project.
Try different angles. Angles can create a more interesting photo.
5) Have Some Fun
Even though there are some great prizes up for grabs, don't forget to let loose, get creative and have some fun. After all, isn't that what Embroidery is about?
